COMMEMORATING THE FRATERNAL BOND OF THE KAPPA ALPHA PSI BROTHERHOOD
On January 5, 1911, ten undergraduate men, led by “The Dreamer” Elder Watson Diggs, founded Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (ΚΑΨ) — the first Fraternity established on the campus of Indiana University. With over 250,000 members across 644 chapters globally the fraternity has earned worldwide prominence and impact.
I’m excited to share with you Brother to Brother, a Special Edition Gift Quilt commissioned by the 34th Grand Polemarch, Rueben A. Shelton, III, Esq. I designed this bespoke piece for the men of Kappa with the Grand Polemarch’s vision in mind just in time for the 86th Grand Chapter Meeting, in Tampa Florida, July 17-23, 2023.
Brother to Brother A Special Edition Gift Quilt
For the men of Kappa, this double-sided quilt is a soft, usable keepsake. A timeless gift for self or others that can be passed down from generation to generation.
Grand Polemarch Shelton wanted me to create a warming reminder of the unwavering bond that spans across generations. The design features four generations of Kappa men Breaking all Barriers and Building Bridges by visioning, executing, preserving and proudly representing a joyful harmonic bond that will continue to shape society’s social, political and economic structure. Brother to Brother one Brother at a time.
The front of the quilt is full of symbolism and highlighted with embroidered touches all over – hair, official attire, ties and more. The back features the fraternity’s Coat of Arms and an enduring quotation from scholarly Founder Byron K. Armstrong.
I’m proud to share that 10% that of the proceeds from this quilt will go directly to the fraternity.

A QUILT TO FORTIFY YOUR JOURNEY
So much of who we are as people of African descent has been passed down from generation to generation. My grandmother taught me to quilt the traditional way when I was 21. Ever since, I have been evolving into the textile artist I am today.
Quilts can heal, inspire, comfort, and share generational stories.
I created my line of gift quilts to touch more people. They are for those quiet moments when we do the hard work of dreaming, reflecting, healing, deciding, and motivating ourselves. I want to support people through the emotional journeys of life while making it easy to give a truly meaningful gift that warms the body and fortifies the spirit.

TO THE MEN OF KAPPA ALPHA PSI FRATERNITY, INCORPORATED
I want to say thank you for this opportunity to develop this Special Edition. When presented with this opportunity I wanted to not only deliver a quality piece that told the Brother to Brother story, but also a quilt full of meaningful symbolism that would be cherished for generations to come.
It is inspiring to witness the dedication and passion that the men of Kappa Alpha Psi display in the pursuit of preserving your traditions, values and original vision set forth by the founders. Your commitment to excellence, scholarship, service, and achievement is truly remarkable.
