CELEBRATING THE RESILIENCE AND VISION OF THE JEWEL FOUNDERS OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA
Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country.
I’m excited to share with you TRANSCENDING ALL commissioned by the 36th General President, Dr. Willis L. Lonzer, III. As a proud daughter and wife of Alpha men I was thrilled to design this Special Edition Gift Quilt exclusively for the men of Alpha Phi Alpha just in time for the 97th General Convention held in Dallas, Texas.
Transcending All A Special Edition Gift Quilt
Commemorating the brotherhood of the men of Alpha Phi Alpha, this double-sided quilt is a soft, usable keepsake. A timeless gift for self or others that can be passed down from generation to generation.
This Gift Quilt honors the seven visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the fraternity, who on December 4, 1906, envisioned the legacy and impact of Alpha Phi Alpha.
The motto – First of All, Servants of All and We Shall Transcend ALL – is adorned on the front. To make the quilt extra special I made sure to include embroidered touches everywhere. From framing the greek letters to highlighting each founder’s nameplate, skin and dignified attire.
The back features the aims as well as, the timeless and resilent gaze of the “Great Sphinx of Giza,” the term specifically used by the Jewel Founders. This resilience and transendence lends to the rationale of why it was chosen to be the symbol of
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
I’m proud to share 10% that of the proceeds from this quilt will go to the Fraternity to further their mission and purpose.

A QUILT TO FORTIFY YOUR JOURNEY
So much of who we are as people of African descent has been passed down from generation to generation. My grandmother taught me to quilt the traditional way when I was 21. Ever since, I have been evolving into the textile artist I am today.
Quilts can heal, inspire, comfort, and share generational stories.
I created my line of gift quilts to touch more people. They are for those quiet moments when we do the hard work of dreaming, reflecting, healing, deciding, and motivating ourselves. I want to support people through the emotional journeys of life while making it easy to give a truly meaningful gift that warms the body and fortifies the spirit.

“Nearly 117 years ago on the campus of Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, seven young college men shaped a vision of brotherhood, scholarship and community support through service that manifested in the successful establishment of the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity for African American men, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Recognizing the significance that quilting holds in our culture – with high quality – Kim Alexis Newton, the daughter and wife of Alpha Phi Alpha men, has successfully captured the transcendent spirit of our “Dear A Phi A” in the form of this Special Edition Gift QuiltTM masterpiece. Now, not only can we enjoy it in the present, but our families and descendants who follow us can remain connected with us. This reality completely aligns with the theme of this Special Edition Gift QuiltTM, “Transcending All.”

I want to start by personally thanking the 36th General President, Dr. Willis L. Lonzer, III for this incredible and meaningful opportunity to celebrate the dignified men of Alpha Phi Alpha by bringing to life his vision for a timeless piece of memorabilia that will be cherished for generations to come.
Your Fraternity’s motto of “First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All”, embodies your history as the first intercollegiate Fraternity founded by African American men. the vision and resilience required set the tone for a century plus of excellence resulting in some of the greatest leaders in modern African-American history.
On the back, the timeless gaze of the “Great Sphinx of Giza”, the term specifically used by the Jewel Founders, lends itself to the symbol of evolution and resilience which is to be admired.
As a proud active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated I know the undeniable power of sisterly and fraternal bonds. So, to all of my brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha, I say thank you and stay covered.
A Tribute to my Father Who Crossed the Burning Sands December 4, 1955, #AlphaChiChapter Fisk University.
Almost 1 year to the date of losing my father I am launching this Alpha Gift Quilt. I am lucky to have two Alpha men in my life, my husband, Nikki and to the first Alpha I knew, my Daddy. Here I am photographed with my husband’s History book and my Father’s plaque.
I found a picture of my dad on line and the poem, IF, right next to it, soon after he passed. I had never seen it before. 🥺 He was clearly on campus with his line brothers (he’s the 2nd from the right).
He still had his paddle and a plaque, both special to him. Now they belong to me.
One of my favorite stories is how while during my high school visit to Fisk, his Alma Mater – now our Alma Mater, he found all the Alphas on campus and directed them to step for me. They placed a single chair in front of the Library and gave me a 20 minute – personal – show at my dad’s direction. I was really impressed! 😂🖤💛🖤 💛
I loved hearing his stories about being on line and I know his line brothers were some of his dearest friends. Just as several #alphachifiskuniversity brothers were mine when I was there.
