7 Meaningful Ways to Take Care of Yourself All Year Long

For generations, Black women have carried extraordinary responsibility — for families, communities, workplaces, and movements. Strength has often been expected rather than chosen. Resilience has been celebrated, yet rarely questioned.

Black Women’s National Day of Rest invites a different rhythm.

The observance is inspired by the work of The Nap Ministry, founded by artist and theologian Tricia Hersey, who teaches that rest can be a form of resistance and healing. In a world that often asks Black women to carry more, do more, and endure more, choosing rest becomes an act of self-preservation.

But restoration should not be limited to one day. True care is something we practice throughout the year.

Here are seven meaningful ways to take care of yourself — not just today, but every season.

1. Protect Your Energy

Not every request deserves your “yes.”
Not every conversation deserves your presence.

Protecting your energy means recognizing when something drains more than it gives. It means setting boundaries without apology and honoring your capacity.

You do not have to be everything for everyone in every season.

2. Schedule Rest the Way You Schedule Work

Many women wait until exhaustion forces them to stop.

Instead, treat rest like a standing appointment. Block time for quiet mornings, slow afternoons, or evenings without obligations. Even brief pauses throughout the day can reset your nervous system and restore clarity.

Research from the American Psychological Association shows that regular rest improves mental clarity, emotional regulation, and long-term wellbeing.

Rest works best when it becomes routine rather than emergency.

3. Create Small Rituals of Comfort

Self-care does not have to be elaborate to be meaningful.

A warm cup of tea before the day begins.
Five minutes of stillness before checking your phone.
Wrapping yourself in something that reminds you to slow down.

For many women, comfort rituals are deeply grounding. Something as simple as sitting quietly under a meaningful blanket or quilt can create a small sanctuary in the middle of a busy day. Thoughtful objects — like a Gift QuiltTM designed with messages of encouragement, faith, or healing — can become gentle daily reminders to pause and breathe.

Rituals do not have to be grand. They just have to be intentional.

4. Release the Myth of Endless Strength

Black women have long been admired for strength, but strength does not mean silence.

You are allowed to feel overwhelmed.
You are allowed to ask for help.
You are allowed to rest without proving how hard you’ve worked.

True strength includes knowing when to replenish yourself.

5. Spend Time Where You Feel Safe and Seen

Rest is easier when you are in environments where you can simply be yourself.

This may be with trusted friends, family, or mentors. It may also be in spaces that nurture creativity, faith, or reflection.

Community has always been one of the most powerful sources of restoration.

6. Reconnect With What Brings You Joy

In busy seasons, joy is often postponed.

Return to the things that make you feel alive — music, art, nature, reading, movement, or creative expression. Joy is not separate from wellness. It is renewal.

For many women, creativity itself becomes a form of rest.

7. Practice the Power of an Intentional Pause

Sometimes the most radical act is simply stopping.

Pause before the next decision.
Pause before responding to every demand.
Pause long enough to hear your own voice again.

This idea is at the heart of The Intentional Pause, a framework I designed to help women step out of constant motion long enough to reconnect with purpose, faith, and clarity.

An intentional pause is not about doing less with your life.
It is about creating the space to live it more thoughtfully.

A Final Reflection

Black Women’s National Day of Rest is more than a moment on the calendar. It is a reminder that restoration belongs in your life all year long.

You deserve care.
You deserve quiet.
You deserve moments where the world slows down enough for you to breathe deeply again.

And sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do — for your mind, your spirit, and your future — is simply rest.
