Sincere and Rare Special Edition Gift QuiltTM
Celebrating the Sincere and Rare of the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha®, this Gift Quilt is a soft, usable keepsake. It is to serve as a timeless gift for self or others that can be passed down from generation to generation.
The design was inspired by the circle of multigenerational sisterhood and fellowship shared by Alpha Kappa Alpha® women. The front features a multigenerational spectrum of dynamic Black women, each adorned in their unique confidence. I made sure there were embroidered touches everywhere—words, clothing, skin, hair and jewelry—to make this quilt extra special.

A QUILT TO FORTIFY YOUR JOURNEY
So much of who we are as women of African descent has been passed down from generation to generation. My grandmother taught me to quilt the traditional way when I was 21. Ever since, I have been evolving into the textile artist I am today.
Quilts can heal, inspire, comfort, and share generational stories.
I created my line of Gift QuiltsTM to touch more people. They are for those quiet moments when we do the hard work of dreaming, reflecting, healing, deciding, and motivating ourselves. I want to support people through the emotional journeys of life while making it easy to give a truly meaningful gift that warms the body and fortifies the spirit.
Golden Soror Grandma
My Soror Grandmother, Dorothy Taylor Brown, taught me how to quilt the traditional way when I was 21 this and this was our first quilt. It represents the fellowship and love we shared as Sorors. She turned Golden (50 years), the year after I crossed. She was a long-standing, dedicated member of Xi Omega Chapter in Washington DC where she retired as a High School Principal.
I grew up understanding how special the mission, sisterhood and service was to my paternal grandmother who we affectionately called, “Mother Dear.”
Everything was by hand. She showed me how to plan, prepare, wash, cut, embroider, stitch the pieces together, quilt and bind. It took hours, days and months. It was quality time and She Taught Me More Than How To Quilt. It is because of her I add so much meaning to every quilt (Art Quilt or Gift Quilt) I have created since.
I cherish it. This along with my other family heirloom quilts from women on both sides of my family are some of my most prized possessions. If you own an heirloom quilt see my article on Preserving Your Heirloom Quilt to make sure it can be enjoyed by generations to come.
It was such a full circle moment then and a full circle moment now that I’ve launched ‘Sincere and Rare‘ in honor of our circle of multigenerational Sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority Incorporated®.
I think she would love the design and I’m excited to think about how it can bond other legacy Sorors across generations.
Pi Chapter Fisk University
My official journey with Alpha Kappa Alpha started on the campus of Fisk University with my Sorors of Pi chapter, which was founded in 1921.
I crossed at 11:21pm on November 13th. That Fall of ’93 I was #17 (EPITOME) on my line called 19 The Unbreakable Bond.
We just celebrated 30 years and have kept in touch, gotten together (see our Silver celebration) and continue to support each other. Today my journey continues as a General Member who actively supports my Sorors and local initiatives.
