About This Design

I designed Bloom as a love letter to Black women and a tribute to who we are in this moment.

For generations, Black women have been pillars of strength, courage, and perseverance. And I am incredibly proud of that. We have nurtured families, built communities, broken barriers, and found ways to thrive even in the most challenging circumstances. But I wanted this quilt to honor more than our ability to endure. I wanted it to celebrate our right to experience joy, embrace softness, pursue our dreams, and flourish on our own terms.

I chose red poppies intentionally. During World War I, red poppies famously bloomed across battle-scarred fields, emerging from soil devastated by conflict—a powerful symbol of resilience, remembrance, and the extraordinary beauty that can rise from even the most difficult circumstances. These vibrant, delicate flowers remind me that strength and tenderness can coexist, and that beauty can emerge from the most unexpected places. Their bold red petals represent both the courage and beauty I see in the women this quilt celebrates.

The portrait of a Black woman surrounded by blooming poppies is an affirmation of her beauty, her power, and her possibilities. The words on the front, “You are a courageous flower who deserves to Bloom,” speak to what I believe every woman deserves to hear.

On the reverse, the message continues:

“Bloom, because our roots have taught you how to grow in the most unlikely places. Bloom, because it is your birthright.”

I hope this quilt serves as a beautiful, warming reminder that while our roots shape us, they do not limit how far we can grow.

And each time someone wraps herself in Bloom, I want her to remember that she deserves more than simply making it through. She deserves to flourish, to live fully, and to embrace all that she is becoming.
